The challenge

Tell a transformation — a daughter becoming the guardian her father was — without ever explaining the rule that governs it. The world has one law, and the film shows it instead of stating it: the Ward holds back the dead and is held up by memory, so to take his place you have to give him what he still keeps of you. If any of that has to be said out loud, the film has failed.

Self-initiated. Termópilas doesn't publish client cases yet, so the brief for both of these came from the studio itself.

The process

  1. 01Close the canon before generating

Characters, world and the six lines of dialogue are fixed in writing and left alone. What isn't in the document doesn't exist: a decision that can be reopened mid-production will be reopened.

  2. 02Keyframe-first: lock the stages, then animate

The transformation shots are solved as stills first, stage by stage. Only once the full progression is approved does anything move. The other way round, every generation returns a different Neve.

  3. 03One colour law, and a single exception

Warm is living memory; cold is forgetting and death. The golden memory in shot 120 is the only full warm note in the entire film, and it works because there is no second one.

  4. 04Negative fill: control the darkness, not the light

The photographic signature is what the black swallows. Backgrounds and trees in absolute black, and two sources working against it: Neve's torch, warm and from below, and the moon, cold and from behind.

One night Neve climbs the hill where her father, turned guardian, is coming apart protecting the village that fears him. To take his place before dawn she has to give up the one thing he still holds: his memory of her. He will die without knowing who saved him; she will live without anyone knowing who she saved.

Love as an act outlives love as a memory. The price isn't dying: it's that nobody knows.

The four stages of shot 140

The transformation wasn't generated in one go. Each stage was locked as a still before anything moved, and only with all four approved was the sequence animated. That's the difference between directing a progression and hoping one turns up.

How it was made

Making of · 55 s · vertical

The film has native sound: the clips carry their own bed — footsteps in snow, wind, torch — and five of the seven dialogue lines came already generated inside the shot, lip-synced. Only two needed a separate voice.

The result

A 2 minute 42 second short in 2K and 2.39:1, with English subtitles, plus a 55-second vertical making of. Twenty-five shots and thirty-one cuts, every one decided on paper before assembly. Submitted to CapCut CRE[AI]TE 2026 in the Film category.

Submitted is not selected: the organisers haven't announced results, and the outcome will be reported here either way. The film has no public link yet — it was delivered to the competition as a file — so this page shows the making of and the directing work, not the short itself. The moment there's a link, it goes in.
